Setting up a radio station : Dave Warring

Great advice from Dave Warring about setting up radio in schools, based on his experiences over many years in Christchurch schools, at Linwood High and Cathedral College. It is a great low cost alternative for production and one that can really involve students in an industry style production experience. Go to his powerpoint to get the details from his workshop.

I need to mention that free to air LPFM is faced with trememdous copetition for frequency space in Auckland and no one should expect an easy start up in this reguard. We have set up an auckland LPFM broadcasters Association to try and sort out frequency and other issues but it only works by agreement of parties concerned. When I started school LPFM in 1993 our signal reached over 15 km but with no change of equipement we are lucky to get much more than say 2-3 km clear reception. Reason: overlapping broadcasters using the same frequency. I can drive from Howick to Pakuranga town centre and pick up in turn at least 3 different broadcasters on 107.7 -which is our current school frequency. At least one blocks out our reception in an area which we used to be heard in.
OK in other parts of NZ the airwaves may not be so full but be aware that anyone can within certain limitations - put a station on air.
